Puri-Konark Development Authority (PKDA) on Friday launched demolition drive against unauthorised buildings along the Puri beach by pulling down an under-construction hotel near Sunar Gourang temple on Chakratirtha Road.The drive was taken up on the direction of National Green Tribunal where Subhas Dutt of Kolkata had filed a complaint pointing out large scale illegal constructions along the beach in violation of the norms of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), pollution at Swargadwar and environment hazard caused due to release of kitchen waste from the Jagannath temple.The Tribunal had asked PKDA to demolish all illegal constructions along the beach. PKDA identified and issued demolition notices to 316 such constructions which included hotels and other commercial establishments.Challenging the PKDA order, some hotel owners filed cases at different courts including the Orissa High Court. The courts’ verdicts are pending, said Secretary, PKDA, Brundaban Barik.During the present drive, 33 hotels will be demolished, he added.Besides Barik, Enforcement Officer Abhimanyu Behera, magistrate and police were present during the demolition drive.
